Instructor Bio: Kim Bernard
Working with encaustic, both 2 dimensionally
and sculpturally, Kim Bernard exhibits her work nationally. Her recent 2-D
encaustic works are capture movement: fluid, gestural, spontaneous, whole
body movement, as in a dance. The results are sumptuous abstract encaustic
paintings that utilize a minimal color palette and repetitive imagery, thick
layers of translucent and opaque wax, paper prepared with batik markings and
hand rubbed oil stick combined to create multi dimensional panels. Bernard
is represented by Arden Gallery in Boston, Boston Sculptors, Bowersock
Gallery, Provincetown, MA, Hawthorn Gallery, Birmingham, AL, Lucky Street
Gallery, Key West, FL and McGowan Fine Art, Concord, NH. She teaches at the
Maine College of Art, Montserrat College of Art and regionally as a visiting
artist. Bernard is the founding member of New England Wax, a professional
association of artists working with encaustic and has offered numerous
presentations on encaustic and sculpture, acted as an invited juror and
guest lecturer.

What You Need to Bring
 |
Panels to work on -
they should be rigid and absorbent - we recommend 5- 10 small (8"x10" or 9"x12")
panels for experimentation - these panels can be lauan or pine, birch or other
types of plywood
|
 |
If you want a white
ground for the encaustics, you can glue a piece of heavyweight watercolor or
printmaking paper, museum board, unprimed linen or canvas to the panel using any
type of archival glue (we recommend Jade or Lineco) - there will also be work
time during the class to prepare panels
|
You can also bring:
 |
any favorite brushes that you like
to work with: bristle, sable, and/or Hake artist brushes, no
synthetic brushes (they burn) or used brushes (danger of solvent residue) |
 |
mark making tools (printmaking, sculpture, ceramic, dental, culinary) |
 |
printmaking materials, drawings, watercolor, tempera or gouache paintings,
papers you like working with or works on paper, collage and assemblage
materials, absorbent 3-dimensional surfaces or object (unglazed ceramics,
plaster, or wood, paper pulp), molds for casting, found objects, stencils, and
anything else you would like to experiment with |
 |
slides or digital files on disk to share
with the rest of the class |

Registration & Policies
Registration Information
Workshops fill up months in advance, so
early registration is strongly recommended. Participants are registered in
the order that their applications are received. You may register by phone
1.800.206.8088, fax (845) 331.3242, or via email:
mail@rfpaints.com. You can also
fill out a registration form
to sign up by mail. Please keep in mind that it is best to phone in your
registration, since we will be able to tell you at that time whether or not a
class is full. If a class is full, we keep a wait list. It is not
unusual for participants to drop out. When this happens you will be
notified asap that a space is open. A $100 deposit is required when
signing up. Once we have received your deposit, we will send you a receipt
which will indicate whether or not the class is fully enrolled. Once the
class is fully enrolled, we will send out a confirmation packet which includes
an accommodations list, directions to the workshop, material to bring, and
technical sheets. The balance of your workshop is due one month before the
class.
For participants that would
like more independent work time, extra days can be added to any workshop held in
Kingston, NY, at a reduced rate of $75 per day. Instruction is not
included, but the use of all paints and tools is. Please let us know
at the time of registration that you want to add days, so we make sure we have
those dates available.
Though rare, if we must cancel a workshop due to insufficient enrollment, you will be notified no
later than one month before the workshop is scheduled. In this event your deposit will be
returned to you in full, or you will be given the opportunity
to transfer it to another session.
If you must withdraw from a workshop, and you give us a minimum of one
months notice, R&F will refund $75 of your initial deposit, retaining a $25
processing fee. We maintain a waiting list, and make every
effort to fill every workshop, but often people on the waiting list are unable
to attend at the last minute. If you must withdraw after the
balance has been paid, R&F will retain the entire amount. If we can replace you
in the workshop we will refund the balance, less the $25
processing fee.
R&F does not assume responsibility for nonrefundable travel and
lodging expenses. We therefore recommend that you wait until your class is confirmed
before making these arrangements.
