Description
This class begins at WSW making monotypes using a variety of
papers. The emphasis will be on a painterly approach to imagery, a quick
and free pace of working, elegant mark making, and color relationships that
evolve in layers. We consider these printed works on paper ‘elements’ –
pieces that we can combine, layer and compose to create narratives. In the
encaustic studio at R&F, we will learn various ways to develop and combine
these elements further using hot wax. Participants will play with collage
and layering, using encaustics’ inherent translucency to create works with
incredible richness and depth.

The use of all paints and equipment is
included in the cost of the classes.
Meals: R&F
provides bagels and coffee in the morning and a catered vegetarian lunch in the

Description
This class will focus on
creating waxed handmade paper works. In the papermaking studio at WSW,
students will work with a variety of natural fibers, including cotton, flax
and abaca. We will create collages utilizing techniques of layering,
imbedding, stenciling, pulp painting and embossing. Using these handmade
paper elements as a starting point, we will then spend two days in the
encaustic studio at R&F Handmade Paints working with wax. We will be
saturating, bending, burnishing, dipping, dripping, staining, transferring,
sculpting and digging into these natural wonders.

Description
Trace monotype offers the
spontaneity of a drawn line with the richness and unpredictability of
printmaking. Made popular by the curious line-based works of Paul Klee,
this class gives the process a 21st Century spin, combining it
with gum transfer, or ‘paper lithography’, a technique which can be used
with either hand drawn or photographic imagery. The nice thing about both
of these low-tech processes is that they do not require a press. Using
papers of different weights will allow us to achieve transparency and
opacity when we saturate them with wax in the encaustic studio at R&F
Handmade Paints. There we will learn the basics of working with encaustic,
and explore ways to further develop our works on paper with collage and
layering, and presentation methods for prints and artists books.
