Encaustic and Paper

Class Levels: Beginner--Intermediate

Works on paper are reinvented in this 3 day multimedia workshop. In this class we explore the nuanced work that can be created from a variety of papers, both Western and Japanese, and encaustic. We begin with methods of dipping and saturating paper with encaustic making the work translucent and giving it the ultimate archival finish. Participants will see an immediate change in the characteristics of the paper, lightweight Japanese papers for example become incredibly translucent and luminous. You are encouraged to bring existing works on paper such as prints or drawings for dipping. Other techniques will include applying color using tinted medium and painting on a paper surface; Monotype and transfer options that will include working with R&F Pigment Sticks and collaging. Laura also demonstrates how to mount drawings and prints on a panel to support working with thicker layers of wax. All experience levels are welcome. Click the title above to read more.

The Awagami Factory is supporting this workshop by generously providing a selection of papers for the students to work on.

We will work with existing prints (photo, traditional printmaking), and drawings in many media. We can “read” imagery through both sides of the translucent paper using direct painting, collage, and transfers. Encaustic basics will be taught (materials safety, basic ways of working) so that this class is appropriate for all levels.
