Hello, I looked through the questions and didn't see this answered.

I am painting with oil paint and paintsticks over the wax, fusing lightly. I am wondering if I need to varnish the final oil paint surface, and if so, with what kind of varnish? I know that the encaustic is easy to remove dust etc, but with the surface being mostly oil paint, how do i keep the surface clean?

hi gigi,
i'm told that joan nelson did some paintings using a technique similar to what you're describing, and she used damar varnish. we don't really know a whole lot about how these combined materials will hold up over time. varnishing is a choice, not a requirement. if you're only doing this to keep the surface clean, you should know that dried oil paint can be cleaned with a soft, damp cloth.
