NEW PAINTING SURFACE DUE OUT

I heard that R&F is collaborating with Ampersand to produce a new surface called 'EncausticBord'.
When will it be introduced? I'm looking forward to trying it!

Re: NEW PAINTING SURFACE DUE OUT

The rumors are true, and we are very excited about it!  The new EncausticBord is pretty much ready to go, and has been fully tested, but there are a few little details that need to be worked out before we can make it available.  We were hoping to have it ready for the Encaustic Conference at Montserrat College of Art, but it seemed more important to get it just right than to do it quickly.  Any day now, though...

Laura,
This sounds exciting. I have written about other Ampersand boards in relation to framing in my monthly column in Picture Framing Magazine--to the trade--so I am eager to get the details on this. I bet there is an article in this for us.

At long last Encausticbord is out!  Velvety white, extremely stable, and ready to go in many sizes and depths.  It is currently being distributed to your local and online retailers.  You can contact us or Ampersand for more details.  Also visit:

Re: NEW PAINTING SURFACE DUE OUT

Anyone try these boards out?  How do they compare to Rodney's panels (assuming those are the standard).

Re: NEW PAINTING SURFACE DUE OUT

I also would like information about the new encaustic boards. I purchased one to try out but have not yet done so. I'm curious about what is recommended for the first coating. Would a layer or two of beeswax + damar be suitable as for other supports or just start painting directly or does this have more to do with what image or effect you're going for? Since my board has a sample of a painting by Laura Moriarty perhaps, you could comment on how you use this product. Thanks.

Re: NEW PAINTING SURFACE DUE OUT

I have started using the new Encausticbords, but I am having a tremondous problem with bubbles coming up from the panel as the medium cools, even after a hard fuse and complete removal of all bubbles.  You can watch the medium as it solidifies and the bubbles are coming from the board and making pin prick holes in the surface.  I do not have this problem with either bare wood panels, or panels prepped with R&F's encaustic gesso.

anyone else having this problem?  Did I get a bad batch of panels (they are 10X10 with a 1.5 inch cradle).  Any hints on how to fix or prevent?

Thanks.  Ginny Headley Maserang

Re: NEW PAINTING SURFACE DUE OUT

Hi Ginny,

Sorry for your frustrations! These bubbles you are describing do not sound normal, but I think we can rule out a bad batch of panels, as our gesso is not made in small batches like our paint is. Ampersand uses R&F Encaustic Gesso for their EncausticBord. All of the gesso Ampersand is using is the same mix.

But for many artists, there has been a learning curve when they switch over to the EncausticBord, because they are used to working a certain way, and the bord does not cooperate. I recommend that you experiment with different heat settings when you fuse. Because you describe watching the medium solidify and bubbles rise up, I am thinking you may be using too much heat.

Let me know if the problem persists,
Laura

Re: NEW PAINTING SURFACE DUE OUT

Thanks Laura.  I will give less heat a try....I suppose arguing "it's always worked for me before" doesn't apply with a new product.  I'll keep you posted on my progress with adjusting my methods.

Thanks again.

Re: NEW PAINTING SURFACE DUE OUT

Not only consider the heat setting when fusing, but also consider allowing the panels to thoroughly cool down when it is producing bubbles. ALL wood has water/moisture in it and when heated it releases the moisture as water vapor. This is what causes bubbles. Continuing heating to get rid of the bubbles is counter-productive. Let it cool.

Re: NEW PAINTING SURFACE DUE OUT

I've prepared some wood constructions with regular gesso in preparation for Casein painting, but I no longer find the medium easy to manipulate. Here is my question: Is it possible to use Encaustic on top of regular gesso. Thanks for any input you might have.

Re: NEW PAINTING SURFACE DUE OUT

If "regular gesso" is acrylic gesso, then, no, encaustic should not be used on top of it. Acrylic gesso is non-absorbent and the encaustic layer will not fuse adequately. On the other hand if you mean traditional gesso (rabbit skin glue, etc), then encaustic would be compatible.

Re: NEW PAINTING SURFACE DUE OUT

Do the encausticbord panels need to be sealed on the sides like other ampersand panels? Thanks in advance for any tips. I'm new to them and haven't been able to find an answer elsewhere.

Re: NEW PAINTING SURFACE DUE OUT

Sealing the sides is a matter of personal preference. There is no general technical reason to do so, unless there is something about your work which requires it.
