NEW PAINTING SURFACE DUE OUTI heard that R&F is collaborating with Ampersand to produce a new surface called 'EncausticBord'. |
Re: NEW PAINTING SURFACE DUE OUTThe rumors are true, and we are very excited about it! The new EncausticBord is pretty much ready to go, and has been fully tested, but there are a few little details that need to be worked out before we can make it available. We were hoping to have it ready for the Encaustic Conference at Montserrat College of Art, but it seemed more important to get it just right than to do it quickly. Any day now, though... |

Re: NEW PAINTING SURFACE DUE OUTAnyone try these boards out? How do they compare to Rodney's panels (assuming those are the standard). |
Re: NEW PAINTING SURFACE DUE OUTI also would like information about the new encaustic boards. I purchased one to try out but have not yet done so. I'm curious about what is recommended for the first coating. Would a layer or two of beeswax + damar be suitable as for other supports or just start painting directly or does this have more to do with what image or effect you're going for? Since my board has a sample of a painting by Laura Moriarty perhaps, you could comment on how you use this product. Thanks. |
Re: NEW PAINTING SURFACE DUE OUTI have started using the new Encausticbords, but I am having a tremondous problem with bubbles coming up from the panel as the medium cools, even after a hard fuse and complete removal of all bubbles. You can watch the medium as it solidifies and the bubbles are coming from the board and making pin prick holes in the surface. I do not have this problem with either bare wood panels, or panels prepped with R&F's encaustic gesso. |

Re: NEW PAINTING SURFACE DUE OUTThanks Laura. I will give less heat a try....I suppose arguing "it's always worked for me before" doesn't apply with a new product. I'll keep you posted on my progress with adjusting my methods. |
Re: NEW PAINTING SURFACE DUE OUTNot only consider the heat setting when fusing, but also consider allowing the panels to thoroughly cool down when it is producing bubbles. ALL wood has water/moisture in it and when heated it releases the moisture as water vapor. This is what causes bubbles. Continuing heating to get rid of the bubbles is counter-productive. Let it cool. |

Re: NEW PAINTING SURFACE DUE OUTI've prepared some wood constructions with regular gesso in preparation for Casein painting, but I no longer find the medium easy to manipulate. Here is my question: Is it possible to use Encaustic on top of regular gesso. Thanks for any input you might have. |
Re: NEW PAINTING SURFACE DUE OUTIf "regular gesso" is acrylic gesso, then, no, encaustic should not be used on top of it. Acrylic gesso is non-absorbent and the encaustic layer will not fuse adequately. On the other hand if you mean traditional gesso (rabbit skin glue, etc), then encaustic would be compatible. |

Re: NEW PAINTING SURFACE DUE OUTDo the encausticbord panels need to be sealed on the sides like other ampersand panels? Thanks in advance for any tips. I'm new to them and haven't been able to find an answer elsewhere. |
Re: NEW PAINTING SURFACE DUE OUTSealing the sides is a matter of personal preference. There is no general technical reason to do so, unless there is something about your work which requires it. |
