Help!

Hello everybody!! I am so happy to have found you! I have been trying to find the right complitment to my photography with mixed media for several months.  I just recently discovered this thing they call Encaustics and seems to be the perfect match. (Still looking for my perfect match, but these two seem to be ideal together!) I have just returned from being out of the country and have 3 upcoming opencall deadlines by the end of this week and need assistance to avoid any further delays with trial and errors.  Please please please help me with a list of instructions on this process as I need to start working on today and have done by Friday!

I would like to pour wax over my photo and then hand texture. I am keeping it simple on my first run. I will need the photo to be color and would like to paint the "frame" around the photo(perferable water color or stain - something transparent - otherwise I have oil paints) , then pour clear beeswax (I guess) over the photo.  Thanks you all so so much!!

Re: Help!

Hi Jodi,

Welcome to the forum.  I have moved your question from the thread about parchment and transfers. In the future, whenever you want to introduce a new topic, you can begin a new thread instead of changing the subject on another discussion. This makes looking up information more productive for others.

You need more than technical advice; you need fundamental instruction. Can you find a workshop to take? That is the best advice I can give you for cutting down on trial and error time. I'm good, but I cannot teach you how to make encaustic and photo works from scratch for a show by Friday through this forum. As a gallery director, I strongly suggest that you learn how to work with encaustic before you plan to submit said works for a show. Your plan sounds simple enough to you, I'm sure, but encaustic is not a magic coating, it's a painting medium. Think about it in reverse for a second: if you knew how to work with encaustic and got this idea about combining it with photography, would you go to a photographer and expect them to bring you up to speed instantly? I really do appreciate your enthusiasm, but take your time and do it right - there will always be opportunities to submit to shows, and if this turns out to be as good a fit as you think, it will be worth the time invested. Make good art first.

Best of luck,
Laura

Re: Help!

Hi Laura,

I figured that would be the response actually and knowing it's probably the right one as well. I was planning on trying to find workshops in NYC after the holidays. Thanks so much again. I look forward to learning more from this forum as well.

Kind regards.

Re: Help!

Our next workshop in NYC will be 5/29-6/1, 2012, at Barbara Ellmann's studio. I highly recommend Barbara's classes, they are excellent and will give you all the info you need to begin working in encaustic. This workshop is not yet listed on our website, but if you would like me to hold a place for you, just email laura@rfpaints.com (remind me of our conversation on the forum).

Re: Help!

Will do Laura. Would you have any idea how much a class like this would cost? Thanks.

Re: Help!

Unfortunately, that might be a bit steep for me right now to commit.  I appreciate the offer to hold a place, but I'll have to get back to you on that one.

Re: Help!

Jodi - I'm also a photographer that has just gotten into encaustics, and I'm hooked. Not sure where you're located, but Binnie Birstein teaches an excellent one day intro into encaustics. Her studio is in Weston, CT and her class was well worth the price!
You can contact her thru her website -

Sorry. You have to be registered to access this content.

Re: Help!

Thank you very much!! I'm also taking online classes from Womackworkshops for a very reasonable price. I am sure all these other workshops are worth it, but I just don't have the money right now. Would love to see your work! Keep me posted on how it goes and I will do the same!

Take care,

Jodi ~
