surface prepI have sculpted stage props using a mixture of white glue and or spackling paste or drywall joint compound. I mix the glue with water and joint compound and it makes a thick paste that can be mixed with or spread over newspaper to cover a sculpture. It dries rock hard and is very similar to gesso. I am wondering if this surface will survive encaustic painting. |

Re: surface prepYour drywall joint compound should do fine, as long as the amount of white glue added doesn't inhibit its absorbency. I know of several artists who have used joint compound as a ground or substrate. As far as structural survival, it will depend on how heavy the wax application is and how you would support it. |
