Encaustic gesso

I am excited by the possibility of creating a more detailed, fully absorbent, under painting prior to the addition of encaustic medium.

Are there preferred products with which to tint/color the gesso, or, are there( other than acrylics) products to AVOID?

Thank you for your help.

Re: Encaustic gesso

Hi Waxgirl,

We actually recommend using a good acrylic paint to tint R&F's Encaustic Gesso, but only in a small quantity. Richard is currently testing many different additives for gesso, so we will have more conclusive information in the future, but the testing takes time.

Good luck!

Re: Encaustic gesso

Thanks, Laura,

I have some high quality liquid acrylics I could use for tinting.  If I really wanted a deeper value color, then should I use watercolor, as Rodney suggested?

Re: Encaustic gesso

Watercolor seems like a good suggestion, too. If I were you, I would test both to see which was preferable.
