Works on paper are reinvented in this 3 day multimedia workshop. In this class we explore the nuanced work that can be created from a variety of papers, both Western and Japanese, and encaustic. We begin with methods of dipping and saturating paper with encaustic making the work translucent and giving it the ultimate archival finish. You are encouraged to bring existing works on paper such as prints or drawings for dipping. Other techniques will include applying color using tinted medium and painting on a paper surface; Monotype and transfer options that will include working with Pigment Sticks; Collaging and basic folded book constructions. Laura also demonstrates how to mount drawings and prints on a panel to support working with thicker layers of wax. All experience levels are welcome. Click the title above to read more.

We replace traditional inks with Pigment Sticks giving participants a palette of 105 colors to play with. Instructor Leslie Giuliani will present the best techniques for successful layering of imagery over a waxed surface. Students are welcome to bring images of all varieties to test the bounds of this process, including drawings, illustrations and photographs. A toner printer is available for creating fresh plates. Participants will leave class able to continue this process as home without needing a press or other specialized equipment. All levels are welcome. Click the title above to read more.

Class Level: Intermediate-Advanced.

1 Space Left in this Workshop!

The qualities that make encaustic an alluring and unique material also create technical and compositional challenges for painters. This class helps participants develop a greater understanding of how to refine and finish encaustic paintings. Lisa begins by reviewing how opacity plays a role in dynamic layering. Hands on exercises will help students understand how to layer for optimal color saturation and luminosity. She emphasizes the importance of compositional elements such as point, line, weight, and space. Participants will learn controlled mark making and surface development using Pigment sticks for glazing and transfer. Using Pan Pastels for diffused color applications will be presented as option for alternative surface development. You are encouraged to identify personal symbols and markings to develop into a deeper visual dialogue. Throughout the class, Lisa demonstrates surface manipulation using torch fusing and scraping to achieve a smooth shiny finish. Mixed Media Encaustic: Texture & Layers

Class Level: Novice

A lush, textured surface adds complexity, substance and reference to time. Because of the inherent properties of wax, the textural and layering possibilities of encaustic far surpass that of any other painting medium. This workshop explores the myriad methods in which to create, add, embed and manipulate surface texture as well as more experimental and lesser known methods. Methods and materials covered in this workshop include the use of Tyvek and polyester, parchment paper decals for creating textured pattern, plaster and paper clay. Also covered is the use of transparent papers such as trace and Duralar paired with paint, water based crayons and pencils and the safe incorporation of these materials into an encaustic painting. A slide discussion regarding the conceptual use of layers in contemporary art is offered as well as an individual consultation for each student with the instructor. This class is ideal for the novice student, looking to expand their foundation.
