Class Level: Intermediate-Advanced
This workshop offers students a creative approach to representational painting with encaustic. It is geared towards the painter interested in pursuing a meaningful and creative dialogue with the visible world. The objects we surround ourselves with are often a reflection of the visual choices, which most deeply engage and move us. The excitement a still life painting session evokes can translate into powerful and sublime painting. Students will bring personal objects, along with other prerequisites, with the aim of transforming them into creative encaustic interpretations.
The class will cover important considerations including composition, theme, focus, texture, spatial interaction, value, and realistic vs interpretive aesthetics. Techniques explored include:
application of paint using brush, knife, spatula, spatter, and pour; layering with opaque and translucent colors for representational painting; fusing layers; incising with dental tools; stenciling; and working with tape for clean edge painting. This workshop is most appropriate for students with an intermediate to a strong working knowledge of the encaustic process.
