Excavating Encaustic

This is a painting workshop for artists who enjoy waxing archaeological. Working with encaustic (pigmented beeswax), in two and three dimensions, both on panels and liberated from them, we will explore various ways that the material can be built up, layered, scraped, folded, embedded, carved, cut, pushed, poured, eroded and stressed. The workshop studio will become a dynamic laboratory where we conduct daily experiments and engage in conversations that expand the traditional boundaries of the medium. Each participating artist can expect to come away from the class with a collection of paintings and objects created in the process of playfully pushing their sense of curiosity and expanding their own aesthetic ideas about what a painting can be. Encaustic Collagraph: From Print to Painting

Collagraph printing is a process that begins by using collage materials to build up a raised textured surface over any rigid substrates such as plexiglas, wood or cardboard to create a printing plate. Inks/oils are applied to the textured surface and printed on paper or fabric. Encaustic collagraph uses wax, in lieu of collage material, as a soft ground that can be incised, carved or built up and manipulated to hold texture. Prints can be made using two distinct methods or a combination of: relief which will reflect the topmost surface of the plate; or intaglio which picks up the recessed details and fine lines.  The flexibility of encaustic gives a dynamic twist to this traditional printing process by giving you a ground that remains stable through multiple print runs for an edition series, yet at the same time can be quickly and easily manipulated after each print for highly controlled monotypes.

Pigment Sticks Monotypes

Monotype is known as the painter’s print or the most painterly of all the printmaking processes. Using our Pigment Sticks to paint, draw, or mark make on a Plexiglass plate we will then transfer the image to paper, and explore the monotype process - without a press. This method of working is very direct, spontaneous and satisfying making it possible to create a number of prints in a short amount of time. Because of the gorgeous range of colors, and the sensitivity for manipulation of the soft oil paint, the process lends itself to expressive work. Whether brushed, rolled, or drawn the look of the transferred print is unique.

Encaustic Assemblage

The focus of the class will be working on panel, to make relief style paintings. We will be creating visual and conceptual depth through embedding material and sculpting wax. The strength and flexibility of encaustic make it an excellent medium for creating compositions with structure and form. It's adhesive qualities make it possible to include absorbent materials and found objects. Final touches can be made by carving, fusing and adding layers of colors. For mixed media artists this is a class not to be missed!
