Paper Lithography with Encaustic and Pigment Sticks

Class Level: Beginner-Novice, this class enhances the study of fundamental encaustic techniques.

This class will continue to accept registrations up to August 4th, limited space is still available.

In this class we will be creating cross media works that incorporate the unique characteristics of an encaustic painting with transferred images. The process we will use to transpose the imagery is called paper lithography. With this simple and effective printmaking technique a toner or laser printed image becomes the printing plate by adding a solution of water and gum Arabic to the surface. Traditionally oil paint is used as the “inking” medium, in this class however we will be using the 105 unique Pigment Stick colors in the R&F oil line. Instructor Leslie Giuliani will present the best techniques for successful layering of imagery over a waxed surface. Students are encouraged to bring images of all varieties to test the bounds of this process, including drawings, illustrations and photographs. A toner printer is available for creating fresh plates, our methods for printing will not require the use of a press.

Encaustic Abstract: Pure & Simple

Class Level: Novice-Intermediate, this class may be repeated by those who wish to further enhance their study of fundamental encaustic techniques.

To participate in this class please register by July 27th.

Working in an abstract style with encaustic is an alluring direction to take with this enticing and bold material, however it can be daunting to work this way with almost limitless possibilities in color, texture and mark making. This workshop is designed to bring confidence to your abstract approach by bringing you back to the basics. Jaya highlights the fundamental techniques and core elements that make abstract work successful. She will refresh some essential tools of the design trade including: composition, focal point, and movement. Key elements in controlling the medium will come through practiced brushwork, precise fusing, and above all a controlled aesthetic. In the class students will utilize a limited color palette as an essential part of understanding basic color relationships. In addition to technical elements of abstract encaustic painting we will also explore the intuitive aspect of the abstract process. During the first half of the workshop we will create sample boards that explore these core elements. The second half of the workshop will be used to complete a larger final encaustic piece. Our mission is to give students guidance and clarity in the creative, abstract process.  After attending this workshop, participants will have a better understanding of how to create stronger abstract paintings with greater ease and enjoyment.

Pigment Stick Monotype

Class Levels: Beginner--Intermediate, this class may be repeated.

To participate in this class please register by October 16th.

Monotype is known as the painter’s print or the most painterly of all the printmaking processes. Using our Pigment Sticks to paint, draw, or mark make on a Plexiglass plate we will then transfer the image to paper, and explore the monotype process - without a press. This method of working is very direct, spontaneous and satisfying making it possible to create a number of prints in a short amount of time. Because of the gorgeous range of colors, and the sensitivity for manipulation of the soft oil paint, the process lends itself to expressive work. Whether brushed, rolled, or drawn the look of the transferred print is unique.

A one-hour demonstration is followed by independent work time, giving participants a chance to experiment with the paint and tools. Mini Workshops are ideal for artists who are curious about encaustic but don't have any previous experience. The topics covered will include: health and safety; what encaustic is; how to get started; and the most popular techniques and applications. If you have worked with encaustic before and desire a refresher course, or have taken the longer workshop but need more experimental work time feel free to participate knowing there is an instructor available to answer your questions. What better way to spend a Saturday afternoon than creating art.

Saturday Lab | Encaustic and Pigment Sticks

Class Level: Novice-Intermediate, this class may be repeated by those who wish to further enhance their study of fundamental encaustic techniques.

This class repeats every month.

The Saturday Lab is a half-day workshop, giving artists a taste of what's possible when using the R&F paint lines. With encouragement toward a self directed approach to your day in the studio, Wayne the instructor will begin with a showcase in alternative techniques in Encaustic and Pigment Sticks. Participants then have the option of breaking away from the formal demonstrations and pursue your own interests. If you would like a refresher on basic techniques the instructor will conduct demonstrations as requested. In the fully equipped R&F studio our instructors will introduce you to the basics of using Encaustic paint and Pigment Sticks, and the possibilities for combining the two. Artists from all varieties of backgrounds will have an opportunity to see firsthand how these materials can be used to enhance their work, or start a new direction all together. Come and experience our paints in action, 99 colors all together!
