Pigment Stick Monotype

Monotype is known as the painter’s print or the most painterly of all the printmaking processes. Using our Pigment Sticks to paint, draw, or mark make on a Plexiglass plate we will then transfer the image to paper, and explore the monotype process - without a press. This method of working is very direct, spontaneous and satisfying making it possible to create a number of prints in a short amount of time. Because of the gorgeous range of colors, and the sensitivity for manipulation of the soft oil paint, the process lends itself to expressive work. Whether brushed, rolled, or drawn the look of the transferred print is unique.

Encaustic Monotype: Molten Painterly Prints with Catherine Nash

This workshop registration is administered by the Morgan Conservatory, please call 216-361-9255 or Click here to be redirected to the registration page for the Morgan Conservatory. If you have any questions please call Kelly at R&F: 1-800-206-8088.

During this 4-day workshop, we explore the variables of heat, paint, paper and pressure and how these elements come together in encaustic monotype. As a melding of two distinct processes, encaustic painting and monotype printing, this class will challenge and expand the technical skills of artists from both backgrounds. Beginning with the basics, we use melted encaustic on a warm plate transferred onto a variety of Western and Japanese papers to build “washes” and visual textures. The use of R&F Encaustic Paint as the printing media rather than traditional inks expands the range of options for color and composition exponentially. Students will learn to control the heat and the subtle mark-making options to produce successful and vibrant designs. The immediacy of the wax allows for quick creation of prints, that can be further enhanced and manipulated. All paints, waxes and heated tools will be provided by R&F Handmade Paints.
